Considerations Before Starting A Business

Starting A Business? Consider These 5 Things.

Starting a small business is the dream of many amateur entrepreneurs, but there are many details and crucial principles to keep in mind. Here are the most important things to remember when starting a small business.

Be Needed

The first key to operating a successful business is to be needed by clients and customers. The ideas that run essential businesses accomplish one of a few different things: they expedite complicated or labor-intensive processes, they reduce others’ costs, or they transform behavior in a way that makes it impossible for those using the product to function without it. Your business doesn’t have to be revolutionary, but it should be innovative, an idea that furthers the goals of other professionals or the consumer marketplace. Beware of sinking a large sum of money into developing an idea that only solves a subjective inconvenience, a personal goal, or a desire which doesn’t generalize to society as a whole. The largest, most profitable businesses are a shortcut, a product or process to take the place of another, now antiquated, product or process.

Start With What You Know

The most proficient entrepreneurs are not those who know the most about everything; many are not even those who know the most about business in general. The entrepreneurs that succeed time and time again are those who are most specialized in their given field, those that know the ins and outs of their sector, how it operates, and how it could operate smoother. Leaders of successful companies are like great artists – they have an idea, a vision, and the necessary knowledge to execute that vision in a way which is both personalized and speaks to the general populace. Execution is the most difficult function of any business, but also the most important; without execution, there are only ideas, floating in ether, useless.

Perseverance Is Strength

Starting a successful business is not easy. It is not simple, it will not make you rich within a month. Hard work and dedication are paramount in the journey to becoming a successful business owner. The highest-paid professionals are those who keep their noses to the grindstone all day long, the first to clock in and the last to clock out. Obstacles are inevitable in the world of business startups, but those who overcome them are in sync with their business, they know their plan and assets. Great business owners are not easily beaten or tired and they don’t sprint through the marathon – they run the pace necessary for sustainable, long-term success. It may feel like a slog, like the work may not be worth the reward, but businesses are beautiful flowers – slow to grow, quick to blossom. With the proper effort, commitment, planning, and agility, any business can blossom.

Income Flows From Multiple Streams

The individuals with dreams that are bigger than their wallets don’t shrink their dreams – they fatten their wallets. While it may seem tempting to start your business with nothing but the clothes off your back and help from friends and family, it’s a foolish endeavor. Many don’t realize the luxury employment brings to fulfilling future goals, treating anything that isn’t their optimal dream as a subpar distraction. This is a mistake. Side hustles and full-time employment are both great accelerators of capital and a great use of time while you develop the finer details of your business plan. Don’t jump headfirst into your dreams; nurture them, and watch them as they grow and mature. Once the time is right, pull the trigger. But not a moment sooner.

Prepare For The Costs

It’s easy to get caught up in the dreams of profit and wealth your new business will bring you. So easy, in fact, that many don’t bother to run the numbers or truly know if their idea will be sustainable, in times of growth or in times of hardship. There are a number of operating costs for every business and overhead is never as cheap as you imagine it will be. The key to turning your dream business into a tangible, operating enterprise is to calculate every detail of your operating costs and revenue. Don’t let your eyes get bigger than your stomach and absolutely don’t forego the finer points of accounting for your business. Every detail matters: salaries, number of employees, day-to-day costs, utility bills, rent. The expenses of business may be daunting but keeping track of them is the number one way to avoid debt or a negative revenue stream.

Now Get Started

Keep these keys in mind and you’ll be able to start the business of dreams. But be warned: starting the business is just the beginning. Successful businesses don’t run themselves once off the ground, it takes dedication, commitment, and perseverance. Being your own boss and giving yourself pats on the back are great motivators, but keep in mind that self-employed workers have to find their own motivation. Being your own boss means never having to hear “get back to work” – a blessing and a curse!

At Tucker Collective, we’re on a mission to bring meeting and workspaces to the 21st century.
I used to have a big problem finding suitable space in the midtown and downtown area to have discreet meetings with clients. I recently discovered the Tucker Collective, and it will now be my office away from my office for which to hold a meeting. Don't go looking for a coffee shop for your next meeting, check out the Tucker Collective.
