Where to Work During a Move or Home Remodel
Contractors in the kitchen. Boxes in the office. Internet that won’t be installed at the new place for two weeks. A move or a remodel can wreck your ability to work from home, often for longer than planned.
Here’s how to keep working without losing your mind or your clients.
Why home stops working
- Noise. Saws, hammers and shop vacs don’t pause for your 10 a.m. call.
- Internet gaps. New service can take days or weeks to install.
- No workspace. Your desk is packed, in storage or covered in drywall dust.
- People in and out. Contractors, movers, inspectors.
Short-term options
Coffee shops. Fine for a few hours of email. Unreliable for calls and full days.
A friend’s spare room. Generous, but you’ll owe them and you won’t have a printer or a meeting room.
Coworking day passes. A $29 day pass at Tucker Collective gets you a seat, business-grade WiFi, coffee, snacks and phone booths, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Same-day passes are welcome, subject to capacity.
A month of coworking. If the project runs longer, a hot desk is $129 for the month, month-to-month. Cancel when your home is back.
How to plan it
- Look at the contractor’s schedule. Book coworking for the loudest days: demo, flooring, anything with power tools.
- Move your calls first. Plan to take every important call from a phone booth or meeting room.
- Keep a go-bag. Laptop, charger, headphones, notebook, snacks.
- Update your address if needed. If you’d rather not have mail going to a job site, ask about mail services.
- Tell clients the plan. “I’m working from a coworking space in Midtown this month” sounds organized.
