Coworking for Introverts: How to Make It Work

“Would you work from a coworking space if you are an introvert?” It’s a real question people ask, and it makes sense. Coworking is usually marketed with pictures of people laughing around a table. If that sounds exhausting, you might assume it’s not for you.

It can be. A lot of the best coworking members are introverts. They just use the space differently.

Coworking doesn’t mean socializing

Most people in a coworking space are working. Headphones on, heads down. Nobody expects you to chat, network or attend anything. The “community” part is optional, and for many introverts, just being around other people who are quietly working is the benefit. It’s company without conversation.

How introverts get the most from coworking

Pick your seat on purpose. Corners, seats facing a wall, spots away from the kitchen and the door. On a hot desk you can choose each day. With a dedicated desk you pick once and keep it.

Use headphones as a signal. In any coworking space, headphones on means “not right now.” It’s the most respected rule there is.

Take calls in a phone booth. Nothing drains an introvert faster than performing a phone call in front of an audience. Booths fix that.

Go at quieter times. Early mornings and late afternoons tend to be calmer than midday.

Book a room when you need to recharge. A small meeting room like Blue or Lucille is $40 an hour. Sometimes an hour behind a closed door is worth it.

Say hi to one person. You don’t need a network. One familiar face makes a space feel safer.

When a private office makes more sense

If you need quiet all day, every day, a shared floor may never feel right. A small private office gives you a door that locks, starting at $899 a month, while still giving you the kitchen, the coffee and people nearby when you want them.

Why introverts often like coworking more than coffee shops

Coffee shops are loud, unpredictable and full of people who aren’t working. A coworking space is quieter, the people around you have the same goal, and you’re not competing for a table. There’s also no pressure to buy another drink to justify staying. Our post on coworking vs the coffee shop goes deeper.

Frequently asked questions

Is coworking good for introverts?
Yes, for many. You can work quietly with headphones on, take calls in phone booths and skip every social event without anyone minding.

Do I have to network at a coworking space?
No. Networking is optional. Most members come to work, not to socialize.

What’s the quietest option at a coworking space?
A private office. At Tucker Collective, small private offices start at $899 a month for one to three people.

How loud is a coworking space?
Usually a low hum of keyboards and quiet conversation, quieter than a coffee shop.

I used to have a big problem finding suitable space in the midtown and downtown area to have discreet meetings with clients. I recently discovered the Tucker Collective, and it will now be my office away from my office for which to hold a meeting. Don't go looking for a coffee shop for your next meeting, check out the Tucker Collective.
